The Real Reason Literature Reviews Are Exhausting (It’s Not the Reading)

Ask a researcher what makes literature review hard, and they will usually say the volume. Too many papers. Too little time. But sit with them during a review session and watch what actually happens: the reading is focused and productive. The exhaustion sets in before the reading starts — during the long, draining process of deciding what is worth reading at all.

Decision Fatigue Is Real and Measurable

The concept of “ego depletion” — the idea that self-control and decision-making draw from a limited cognitive resource — was introduced by Baumeister and colleagues in a now-classic series of experiments (Baumeister et al., 1998, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 74(5), 1252–1265). Participants who made a series of choices performed significantly worse on subsequent tasks requiring sustained attention.

The effect has been replicated — and debated — extensively. A large-scale preregistered replication by Vohs and colleagues across 36 labs found a small but statistically significant depletion effect (Vohs et al., 2021, Psychological Science, 32(7), 1059–1073). Even critics of the original effect size agree on the central finding: sustained decision-making is cognitively costly.

For researchers, the implication is practical: every “relevant or not?” decision you make while scanning search results, email alerts, or journal tables of contents costs cognitive resources — the same resources you need for deep analytical thinking, experimental design, and manuscript writing.

The Paradox of Choice in Academic Literature

Barry Schwartz described a phenomenon familiar to anyone with too many PubMed results: when the number of options increases, satisfaction with the chosen option decreases, the effort required to choose increases, and the likelihood of making no choice at all goes up (Schwartz, 2004, The Paradox of Choice, Ecco Press).

In the context of literature review, this manifests as the open-tab problem: 40 search results, 12 tabs opened, 3 actually read, 9 bookmarked “for later.” The bookmarks accumulate. The guilt compounds. The review never feels complete.

Tenopir and King found that researchers spend an average of 38 minutes per article reading time, but the total time per article — including searching, scanning, evaluating, and discarding — is considerably higher: finding a relevant article often takes longer than reading it (Tenopir & King, 2000, Towards Electronic Journals, SLA Publishing). The selection overhead is the hidden tax on every review.

The Three-Layer Model

An effective literature management process separates three cognitively distinct tasks, rather than collapsing them into one draining session:

  1. Collection (low cognitive load). Gathering potentially relevant papers from various sources. This is high-volume, low-judgment work — and the easiest layer to automate.
  2. Triage (medium cognitive load). Scanning summaries or abstracts to decide what deserves a close read. This should take minutes, not hours, and works best when you have structured information (key findings, methods, journal context) to speed the decision.
  3. Deep reading (high cognitive load). Engaging critically with the full text of selected papers. This is where your domain expertise adds the most value — and it is the task that suffers most when preceded by a long, draining selection process.

Most researchers collapse all three layers into one session: search, scan, evaluate, read, repeat. This maximizes cognitive load and degrades the quality of every stage.

Practical Strategies

  • Automate collection entirely. Use curated digests, institutional alert systems, or RSS aggregators to gather papers without active effort. The goal is to arrive at your triage session with a pre-filtered, manageable set.
  • Time-box triage. Give yourself exactly 15 minutes. When time is up, commit to your selections. Parkinson's law applies: unlimited triage time produces unlimited indecision.
  • Read in separate blocks. Schedule 30–45 minute deep-reading sessions as distinct calendar events, not as the tail end of a scanning session. Arriving fresh at a paper makes the reading more productive.
  • Use structured summaries. Papers with pre-extracted key findings let you triage faster because you do not need to parse each abstract yourself. The decision becomes “does this finding matter to me?” rather than “what is this paper about?”

Where Automation Helps Most

Collection is the highest-volume, lowest-judgment layer of literature review.
